Gert Riel was born in 1941 in Prien at Lake Chiemsee, Germany. He lives and works in Remshalden-Buoch, Germany.
Gert Riel’s fascination with metal arose because of its combined strength and elasticity. Metal can be repeatedly reworked and changed. Gert Riel focuses on this characteristic and on an elementary formal language that was influenced by Concrete Art and Minimalism. The works shown are partially colored aluminum reliefs. Of the rounded shapes that move optically away from the wall into the room, partial surfaces are lacquered in matt color. The aluminum reflects the surrounding space, the matt color placed above it forms another spatial plane. This reveals different perceptions for the viewer depending on the viewing angle.
