Franz Riedl was born in 1976 in Bad Ischl, Austria. He lives and works in Vienna, Austria.

After studying in Japan, Riedl’s interest in paper as a material for his constructions has intensified. What interests the artist is the untreated paper and rendering visible its strength and surface. He cuts and scores its white epidermis; he brings the resistance of the material, the vulnerability of the surface to the fore and folds the excised parts backwards – nothing is lost. The positive surface elements are complemented by the negative, relief-like cutouts. Space and architectural perspectives are translated into an abstract and pure reduction of form that takes on its pictorial nature from the delicacy of the millimeter-thin layers.
