Till Augustin was born in 1951 near Starnberg / Bavaria, Germany. He lives and works in Nuremberg, Germany.
Till Augustin turns massive glass sheets – more correctly floatglass – into blocks of laminated glass of a great variety of volumes. The artist shapes these complex glass blocks like a sculptor, not only by means of hammer and chisel but by pneumatic drills and grinding devices. Due to this extremely rough forming process pieces of glass develop – edgy, sometimes almost aggressive sculptures – that are often placed in the height of the viewer‘s eyes. The addition of translucent sheets and the incidence of light suggest the attractive type of green reminiscent of tropical waters. In other works steel dust and ferric oxides are placed onto the surface giving them the appearance of heavy, voluminous steel objects, even though finally – due to their inner transparency – their fragility is revealed.
